Two cops get 15-year jail for changing case property

PESHAWAR: A local court has convicted two policemen for breach of trust and changing the quantity of narcotics seized in a criminal case and sentenced them on multiple counts to a total of 15 years rigorous imprisonment with fine of Rs560,000 each.

An additional sessions judge, Mirza Mohammad Kashif, pronounced that the prosecution had proved its case against the two accused persons named Azizur Rehman and Rashid Hussain and the evidence on record connected them with the commission of the offence.

The accused were charged in an FIR registered at Peshawar’s Gulberg police station under different provisions of Pakistan Penal Code and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Act.

The FIR was registered after an inquiry was conducted regarding certain missing case property of a criminal case. The inquiry revealed that around 32kg of charas and 8.95kg of opium were found less than the seized quantity.

Along with the two accused Rehman and Hussain, who were moharrar and additional moharrar, respectively, two other officials, including a DSP, Haroon Khan and an SHO, Abdul Aziz, were also named in the FIR. However, the latter two officials had already been discharged in the case by the court earlier.

The court sentenced the two convicts under section 409 (criminal breach of trust) of PPC to 10 years rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs500,000 each. They were also convicted and sentenced under section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) of PPC to three years rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs50,000 each.

Moreover, they were convicted and sentenced to one year imprisonment and fined Rs5,000 under sections 118 (c) and 118 (d) of the Police Act.
