Dog-bite cases

THIS is with reference to the letter ‘Rabies spread can be controlled only through practical steps’ (Feb 15). Rabies is now rampant in Pakistan, especially in Sindh. Last year, over 42,000 dog-bite cases were reported in Sindh. The number is increasing every year. Once you see a rabies-affected patient dying, you can never forget the pain and misery patients and their families have to go through. Only God knows why we are unable to control the population of stray dogs. Tens of millions have been spent recently to make the stray dogs infertile. This is a joke, really.

I remember clearly that back in time, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) trucks used to roam around the city catching stray dogs. This never involved spending millions. I wonder why we cannot start such drives again. I also wonder when, if at all, those in power will wake up to the grim reality. Apparently, they are waiting for some VIP to be bitten by a rabid dog.

Further, the same KMC trucks used to carry used motor oil to sprinkle over pools of stagnant water to kill mosquitoes. If revived, the drive will control dengue as well. The authorities are probably planning some novel method to handle the situation, but, trust me, we do not have to reinvent the wheel in this case.
