KARACHI: Police on Tuesday claimed to have recovered stolen gold, silver and diamonds worth Rs300 million after arresting six alleged robbers, including an employee of a jewellery shop in Orangi Town.

DIG-West Irfan Ali Baloch described it one of the biggest robberies in the history of Karachi, committed in a “Hollywood filmi-style”.

Flanked by West SSP Tariq Illahi Mastoi and Central SSP Dr Imran Khan, the DIG told a press conference that the suspects entered the jeweller shop in Orangi Town during the night by cutting through the rear wall with a grinder and decamped with gold, silver and jeweller kept in a safe.

He said that a special investigation team was formed which within 48 hours detained one employee of the shop, namely Amir Alam, alias Amir, who during interrogation ‘confessed’ to the robbery.

Amir was a special employee of shop owner Asad. He had been working at the shop for the last 15 years.

On his pointation, five other suspects, including a mastermind, were arrested and all looted valuables worth Rs300m were recovered from hidden places.

DIG Baloch said these suspects were craftsmen at different jeweller shops in the metropolis.

He said the held employee, Amir, along with mastermind Irfan had planned the robbery around six months ago for which Amir had got a duplicate key and handed it over to Irfan.

He said the held suspects had also got a house on rent where stolen boxes were kept as part of their plan to dispose of the stolen 606 tolas of gold gradually with some planning.
