KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) on Monday announced a large-scale infrastructure rehabilitation programme aimed at improving roads and municipal services across the city.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the Engineering Department of KMC chaired by Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab. During the meeting, key policy directions and timelines were finalised to speed up development work.
A statement issued after the meeting said the KMC, under the plan, will carry out extensive rehabilitation of roads across all districts. In addition to roads under its direct control, the corporation has decided to rehabilitate 183 additional roads to improve connectivity and traffic flow.
Officials said priority will be given to major and high-traffic arteries, while ensuring that alternative routes remain available to reduce inconvenience to the public.
“The mayor directed that all schemes be finalised on a priority basis and that tenders be issued before Eid so that work can begin without delay. He instructed departments to maintain a steady pace of execution in line with the scope of the project,” said the statement.
As part of the initiative, it added, Jahangir Road will be converted to solar-powered street lighting.
Municipal Commissioner Samira Hussain briefed the meeting on the selection of roads in different districts.
During the meeting, the mayor also directed the engineering and relevant departments to improve the management of street lighting systems, alongside road rehabilitation, to ensure safer and better-lit roads.
