Cop martyred in attack on police station in Bajaur

BAJAUR: An additional station house officer was martyred after terrorists attacked a police station in the War Mamund tehsil of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bajaur district late on Saturday night, officials said.

According to a police statement, a group of terrorists assaulted the police station in the Umary area, using both light and heavy weapons.

Officials said that the personnel deployed at the site “quickly acted and repelled the assault” following the late-night raid.

“The police personnel successfully foiled the overnight attack of militants at the War Mamund station, but Additional SHO Gul Mahmood Din was martyred after fighting bravely,” said a senior police official who visited the area with his team on Sunday morning.

The official told Dawn that all other station personnel were safe and secure, following the exchange of fire that forced the terrorists to flee. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. Local residents said the deceased official hailed from the Laghari area of Lowi Mamund tehsil. They noted a history of violence against the family, mentioning that his father, Juma Din, a member of the former Bajaur Levies force, was also “martyred in a rocket attack” by terrorists at the Nakhtar post in 2009.

Gul Mahmood Din was laid to rest in his native area on Sunday afternoon with full official honors. Funeral prayers were attended by a large number of people from different walks of life.

Attacks on police personnel, law enforcement agencies, and security forces have escalated across the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan , especially after the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) broke a ceasefire agreement with the government in November 2022.
