SC asks govt to deport Egyptian family, Tajiks

ISLAMABAD, June 16: A three-member bench of the Supreme Court on Friday directed the Federal Government to make arrangements for deportation of a six-member Egyptian family and two Tajiks by contacting their embassies through Foreign Office in accordance with the law. The bench, comprising Chief Justice Mr Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar and Justice Saiyed Saeed Ashhad, heard an application submitted by Senator Ibrahim Paracha on humanitarian grounds.

The bench expressed its satisfaction over the report submitted by the NWFP Advocate-General Pir Liaqat Ali and disposed of the application with the direction to deport all the eight foreigners, who had been living in the offices of Al- Khidmat Foundation, Hayatabad, Peshawar.

Farooq Saad Ahmed, an Egyptian, his wife and four children and two Tajik nationals were arrested from Peshawar for not having valid documents and handed over to Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) for interrogation.

After interrogation, the Agency submitted a challan against them. They were released by the trial court on bail.

Deputy Attorney-General Nasir Saeed Sheikh, apprised the court of the efforts being made by the Federal Government for the deportation of the foreigners.

Advocate M.Bilal also appeared along with the advocate- general and assisted the court on behalf of the NWFP government.

The bench, taking serious note of the statement made by the applicant, observed that Pakistan was being defamed and blamed for various reasons, including the issue of harbouring of illegal foreign immigrants by some organizations.

The court told Prof Ibrahim that larger interest of the country should be the guiding principle for every Pakistani.

DIRECTION TO IGP: The three-member bench of the apex court in another case directed Inspector General of the Punjab Police for issuing directions to all his police officers for performing their duties honestly and conduct investigation of cases on merit otherwise be ready to face consequences of wrong doings.

Expressing its dissatisfaction over the report submitted by the Lahore Police in the murder case of Nazeeran Bibi registered at the Township Police Station, the bench directed the additional advocate-general (AAG) who submitted progress report before the bench to convey observations of the bench to the IGP specially regarding preparing false progress reports for the apex court.

The bench observed that this practice would not be tolerated in future.

The bench also warned the provincial AAG Khadim Hussain Qaiser to read progress reports carefully before submitting them before the court.

Superintendent of Police, Investigation Wing, Lahore, also appeared before the court and sought time to investigate the matter on merit which was granted by the bench till June 23.

The bench suspended the proceedings of the case for one hour and directed the AAG to submit facts of the case.

After a break of one hour, the additional advocate-general apprised the bench that Inspector Tariq Zafar of the Township Police Station, Lahore, had been suspended on June 15 for conducting faulty investigation of the case.

All the five accused nominated in the murder case — Malik Azhar and his wife Humaira, Malik Zahid, Malik Abid and Malik Musa — were arrested June 15 late in the night, the SP, investigation informed the court.

The additional advocate-general also apprised the court that Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Rana Muhammad Iqbal, had constituted a four-member team headed by SSP Chaudhry Shafqat Ahmed to investigate the case. Members of the team are Chaudhry Masood Aziz, SP Organized Crimes, Capt Ghulam Azfar (ASP), Umar Virk (DSP) and Inspector Shamim.—APP
