MIANWALI: The deputy commissioner has formed a three-member committee to probe the death of a murder convict in a Faisalabad hospital, who had allegedly set himself on fire in the Mianwali central jail on Feb 2.

As per an application written by Mianwali Central Jail Assistant Superintendent Iqbal Hussain to the SHO of city police station, on Feb 2,Abid Hussain, a resident of Bonga Minhas, Sargodhadistrict, was convicted and sentenced to 25 years rigorous imprisonment (RI) on two counts with a fine in a murder case (No 417/31/07/2010) registered with Chakian police station.

It said the convict was transferred to Mianwali central jailon March 11, 2017, where he had been confined in the mental ward of the jail hospital since Jan 21, 2024, due to mental health issues.

The application says that the convict allegedly burnt himselfin the jail hospital’s washroom on Feb 2 and was shifted to the local district headquarters hospital, where doctors referred him to the burns unit of Faisalabad hospital.

The assistant superintendent sought registration of a case against the convict for burning himself.

However, Abid Hussain later succumbed to his burns on Monday, Feb 2, at the Faisalabad hospital.

Taking notice of the incident, Mianwali DC has constituted a three-member committee headed by the additional deputy commissioner (Revenue) and comprising the DHQ hospital medical superintendent and health CEO, to probe thematter.

Meanwhile, the relatives of the deceased have reached Sargodha Press Club and alleged that Abid had allegedly been murdered by their enemies, in connivance with Mianwali jail officials, demanding a thorough probe into the incident.
