KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday issued notices to provincial authorities and police on a petition of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) challenging the detention of around 180 party workers under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance.

A two-judge constitutional bench of the SHC headed by Justice Yousuf Ali Sayeed also put the advocate general on notice for Feb 6.

On Feb 1, the Sindh home department issued notifications under MPO to detain as many as 180 PTI workers, who were picked up from all the seven districts in Karachi, for 30 days on the ground that they “are instigating public to block roads, highways and organise sit-ins, which may disturb peace and tranquillity and can create serious law and order problems”.

The party, through its provincial general secretary Mansoor Ali Sial, filed a petition and submitted that the impugned notifications were illegal and without lawful authority.
