Governor overturns ombudsman’s order against KE chief in harassment case
KARACHI: Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori has set aside an order of the provincial ombudsman for protection against harassment of women about removal of Moonis Alvi as the chief executive officer of K-Electric over workplace harassment.
The information came to light when KE informed the Pakistan Stock Exchange on Tuesday that the governor “after hearing arguments of the concerned parties and reviewing the relevant records has set aside the impugned order” passed by the ombudsman on July 31.
In his order, a copy of which is available with Dawn, the governor, being the appellate authority, noted that the ombudsman had completely ignored the evidence available on record.
In July last year, the ombudsman ordered removal of Mr Alvi for causing harassment to a former chief marketing and communication officer of the KE and also directed him to pay Rs2.5 million to the complainant in compensation.
Thereafter, the KE chief had approached the SHC, which had suspended the order of the ombudsman.
Mr Alvi had also filed a representation/appeal before the governor and after hearing both sides and examining the record the governor overturned the impugned order.
During the hearing, Mr Alvi argued that the complaint was not maintainable and there was no harassment involved while order passed by the ombudsman was based on assumptions.
The complainant in her arguments stated that the findings of the ombudsman’s order were correct and in accordance with law and there was no requirement under the law to approach any other authority by filing a complaint and therefore the question of maintainability did not arise.
