KARACHI: A woman was shot dead and another wounded in a suspected targeted attack outside a pharmaceutical company in Sharafi Goth on Monday evening, police said.

They identified the deceased as 45-year-old Asma Haroon, and wounded as Sumaira Ismail, 22.

Sharafi Goth SHO Qamar Abbas said both the women worked at the pharmaceutical firm.

He said that as they came out of their workplace, a lone gunman opened fire on them and fled. Both the women suffered serious bullet wounds and were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where doctors pronounced Asma dead on arrival.

Police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed said she sustained a single bullet wound in the head, while Sumaira was shot in the right arm.

The SHO suspected that Asma was the actual target of the assailant. She was mother of five children, including two sons, he added.

The officer said it appeared to be a targeted killing incident. However, investigations underway to ascertain the exact motive.

Meanwhile, a young man was shot dead in Sohrab Goth late on Sunday night, police said on Monday.

Ajmal Khan, 28, was passing through Laasi Goth when unidentified assailants shot and killed him. No belongings were taken from the victim, who originally hailed from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
