ISLAMABAD: The government on Monday decreased the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs14 per litre while keeping the rate of petrol unchanged for the fortnight ending Dec 31, citing favourable international market trends.
In a late-night announcement, the Petroleum Division said the revision followed movements in international markets and recommendations of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra).
According to the notification, the ex-depot price of HSD was reduced by Rs14 per litre, or five per cent, to Rs265.65 per litre from Rs279.65 per litre.
Most of the transport sector relies on HSD, and its price is considered inflationary as it is widely used in heavy transport vehicles, trains and agricultural engines like trucks, buses, tractors, tube-wells, and threshers. It also affects the prices of vegetables and other eatables.
Transporters had already increased their fares on the basis of about Rs27 per litre increase between May and August and have not reversed them despite a Rs9 per litre reduction.
The ex-depot petrol price was kept unchanged at Rs263.45 per litre. Petrol is mainly used in private vehicles, small cars, rickshaws and two-wheelers, and directly affects the budgets of middle- and lower-middle-income households.
Earlier, Ogra notified up to 6pc reduction in the price of Regasified Liquified Natural Gas (RLNG) for sales at distribution stage by the two Sui gas companies for the current month, mainly because of lower international oil prices.
According to a notification, the RLNG sale price for SNGPL at the transmission stage came down by 4.5pc to $10.92 per million British thermal units (mmBtu) for December, against about $11.43 per mmBtu in November. The sale price at distribution stage for SNGPL was, therefore, reduced by 4.61pc to $11.83 per mmBtu for December, against $12.24 in November.
Meanwhile, the RLNG sale price for SSGCL at the transmission stage was decreased by 5.87pc to $9.47 per mmBtu for December, compared with $10.065 in November. The sale price at distribution stage for the company was also reduced by 5.9pc to $10.77 per mmBtu for the current month, against $11.45 in November.
