LAKKI MARWAT: A jirga has declared that the people’s support is inevitable to eliminate terrorism and establish lasting peace in the region.

The tribal elders met in the Behramkhel area here on Monday to discuss matters pertaining to the law and order and peace initiatives.

Senior military and police officials, including Commander 55 Brigade Brig Haider Ali and district police officer Nazir Khan also participated.

On the occasion, a senior police official said the jirga meeting was called to improve liaison and coordination with elders and know their views and suggestions about how to improve law and order in the area.

Elders said that they would protect their soil from anti-state and anti-peace elements. They reiterated that they would not allow anyone to disturb peace and use their land for subversive activities.

The elders said if miscreants tried to infiltrate the area, they would face the wrath of tribesmen.

An elder said that the sons of their soil were working in the police, security forces and other law-enforcement agencies and the elements launching attacks against them would be treated as enemies.

“We better know how to deal with enemy,” another elder said, adding that the tribesmen and law enforcement personnel will cleanse the entire region of the scourge through joint and integrated efforts.

They said that they would cooperate with the police and security forces in their actions against terrorists.

The military and police authorities also heard the people’s problems and promised their effective and early resolution through the relevant agencies.

They said such meetings would help strengthen coordination among the police, army and residents.

The district police chief said that the police were fully capable of tackling security challenges effectively.

“Along with establishing lasting peace in the region, we are also focusing on crime prevention and eliminating social and moral evils,” he said.

The DPO said the police would utilise all available resources to provide a safe and peaceful environment to the people.

Brig Haidar Ali said facilitating terrorists and miscreants was intolerable, so anyone involved in such and other illegal activities would face stern action.

The officials said trust and cooperation between law-enforcement agencies and people were inevitable for sustainable peace.

They praised the Behramkhel elders for their positive and active role in maintaining peace in the area.
