SUKKUR: The All Sindh Lawyers’ Convention at the District Bar Sukkur, organised on Saturday to protest the 27th Constitutional Amendment, was marred by commotion and clashes between lawyers and several alleged workers of a political party.
Tensions rose when some individuals started chanting slogans against President Asif Zardari, while others countered with slogans in favour of the president.
The situation deteriorated with the involvement of some individuals in plain clothes, which ultimately led to verbal altercations and scuffles between them and the lawyers.
Some protesting lawyers reportedly overpowered five men in civvies who had entered the convention hall and began beating them.

Advocate K.B. Laghari said the individuals were apprehended and handed over to the police. “Lawyers are brothers, and no one can make us fight,” he said.
He added that amid the unrest, Sindh High Court Bar President Qurban Ali Malano felt unwell and was shifted to a hospital in a deteriorating condition.
The lawyers said that the commotion began when Karachi Bar General Secretary Rehman Korai criticised
Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar during his speech. Upon hearing this, the alleged workers of a political party reportedly attacked senior bar leaders, including Aamir Nawaz Waraich, Qurban Malano, K.B. Laghari, Haseeb Jamali, and Shafqat Raheem.
Although other lawyers tried to save their colleagues, several senior members sustained minor injuries and were taken to the civil hospital for medical treatment.
Meanwhile, Sindh United Party (SUP) President and Save Sindh River Movement Convener Syed Zain Shah strongly condemned the attack on the lawyers, saying “it appeared to have been carried out under state patronage”.
He said the assault was not only an attack on the legal fraternity but also a direct blow to the Constitution, the law, democratic values and freedom of expression.
Mr Shah said that such incidents were a dangerous attempt to sabotage Sindh’s peaceful and democratic political struggle.
He reaffirmed that the SUP stands firmly with the lawyers in their constitutional and legal struggle and will support them at every forum.
