GUJRAT: As many as 51 different roads across the district will be rehabilitated under the Punjab government’s road restoration programme.

The district coordination committee (DCC) recently approved the schemes as per the proposals of the ruling coalition’s lawmakers from Gujrat.

Official sources said that a sum of Rs3.3 billion was expected to be spent on the project as these projects would be launched following the approval from the provincial cabinet. They said the schemes had already been sent to the communication and works department for further action.

The sources claimed that most roads proposed in the scheme were located in far-flung rural areas of the district.

They said that the proposed roads included Khohaar to Puran village at a cost of Rs235 million in Sara-i-Alamgir tehsil, Sohal Khurd to Sialkot Airport road at Rs144 million, GT Road bypass to Sheikh Sukha road at Rs176 million, Mungowal to Dinga road near Khoja Rs225 million, Dhama to Shah Sarmast road near Lalamusa at Rs181.60 million, city’s Shadiwal road at Rs120 million, as well as other roads in the district.

Meanwhile, the highways department has started to uproot the city’s old Rehman Shaheed road’s 1.4 kilometres long portion from the Servis Mor to the Shadman Colony Chowk to build a new road.

The development came after traders and residents of the area urged Gujrat Deputy Commissioner Nurulain Qureshi to rebuild the road without raising its level. They believed that by raising the road level, serious damage could be caused to the commercial as well as residential properties on the road.

The portion of the Rehman Shaheed road’s dual carriageway would have to be built with concrete at a cost of Rs290 million, as the road had been damaged during laying down a new pipeline for improving the sewerage system.
