ANP to attend govt peace jirga

PESHAWAR: Awami National Party (ANP) has announced to participate in the provincial government’s peace jirga, scheduled to be held on November 12 at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, saying the party would continue to play a constructive role for restoration of lasting peace in the province.

In a statement here on Monday, ANP provincial president Mian Iftikhar Hussain said that the party had always stood for peace, strengthening of democracy and supremacy of the Constitution. He said that ANP remained committed to supporting every sincere effort for stability and development of the province.

He said that the ANP delegation, led by him, would represent the party at the jirga and present proposals for peace, stability and constitutional rights of the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Mr Hussain said that achieving durable peace required serious commitment from all political forces and stakeholders. He added that ANP would continue its struggle for peace, provincial autonomy and democratic rights.

He said that ANP’s stance against terrorism and lawlessness had always been principled. He said that history was witness to sacrifices of ANP for peace. “We will never compromise on the province’s peace and rights and will continue to play an active role for supremacy of the Constitution and democracy,” he added.

The peace jirga, being convened by the provincial government, aims to bring together representatives of all major political parties to discuss strategies for restoring peace and countering militancy across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
