GUJRANWALA, Feb 7: PPP city president Chaudhry Khalid Humayun and his father Chaudhry Muhammad Ishaq were arrested and sent to jail on Thursday when the district and sessions judge rejected their bail applications in a murder case.
The PPP leader and his father were among the nominated accused in the murder case of Shahzad Siddiq, the son of vegetable market commission agents president Haji Muhammad Siddiq.
Saddar police had arrested other accused after the murder of Shahzad some weeks ago but the PPP leader and his father were granted interim bail by the Lahore High Court. Later, the Lahore High Court referred the case to Gujranwala district and sessions judge Asad Raza and ordered that Rs50,000 worth surety bonds each should be deposited with the court.
The judge completed the bail application hearing on Wednesday and announced the decision on Thursday.
Police authorities tightened the security in and around the court following deploying
Elite Force and police personnel were deployed in and around the court. Scores of PPP activists and leaders had gathered outside the court.
ROAD ACCIDENT: Two people were killed while 20 others were injured in a road accident near Rajewala village on Thursday.
A bus was on its way to Sheikhupura from Gujranwala. It overturned near Rajewala village when the driver lost control over the steering because of over speeding. As a result, an elderly woman Shakooran Bibi and Jalal Din died on the spot while 20 others were injured.
The condition of the injured was stated to be critical at the local civil hospital.
POWER THEFT: The Nazim of a union council was reportedly caught red-handed while stealing electricity for his marriage ceremony in Dilawar Cheema village on Thursday.
According to reports, Nazim Muhammad Shahbaz Cheema got direct connection from Wapda’s main supply line to illuminate his house on occasion of his marriage ceremony. A Gepco team, on a tip-off, raided there and removed the meter and other equipment.
The raiding team issued him heavy detection bill besides registration of power theft case against him.
COP BOOKED: An assistant sub-inspector and his associate were booked in a fraud case here on Thursday.
Businessman Haji Muhammad Bashir gave Rs115,000 to ASI Zafar Iqbal and his associate Muhammad Ilyas to bring for him new currency notes from the State Bank. The accused later denied to hand over the money to him.
Model Town police registered the case against the accused and are investigating.
Some swindlers deprived many citizens of Rs50,000 on the pretext of providing them mobile phone connection for Rs500 instead of Rs2,000.
