DERA GHAZI KHAN, May 25: MNA Ameena Jaafar Leghari said on Wednesday she would constitute anti-vani jirgas in Dera and Rajanpur to eliminate the inhuman practice.
At a news conference along with vani victims Nusrat Bibi, 9, and Salma Bibi, 5, of Sakhi Sarwar, the MNA said an illegal jirga was held in November, 2005, to settle down the matter of relations between Nusrat’s brother and Shaukat’s sister.
The jirga decided that Nusrat Bibi would be married to 16-year old Shaukat and her cousin, Salma Bibi, to Shaukat’s brother Akhtar after puberty.
After two days of the decision, Nusrat was handed over to Shaukat after nikkah in which her age was written as 18 years. She spent some months in the house of Shaukat where his grandfather allegedly sexually assaulted her. She left the house of Shaukat and reached her parents’ home.
The parents of Nusrat and Salma sought the help of MNA Jaafar Leghari and his wife, MNA Ameena Jaafar Leghari, after receiving life threats from Shaukat and his family.
Ameena Leghari told newsmen that she had met the DPO along with the vani victims and demanded early arrest of the jirga members. She said she would hold anti-vani jirgas in tribal areas of Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur to end this inhuman practice.
