KASUR: Relief operation intensified in the district as six more villages, usually considered less vulnerable, are in danger of being submerged after India broke the embankment at Rajowal Chowki on Thursday.
Police, Rescue teams and the administration evacuated 1,771 villagers on Thursday, bringing the total number to 3,962 from Talwar post. The vulnerable villages include Raji Wala, Mahalam, Bhadian, Ganda Singhwala, Sultan Shah and Fatohiwala. Guage at Talwar post recorded water levels at 23 feet at exceptionally high flood level.
Ferozepur nallah coming from India was also overflowing causing concern for residents of Balanwala and Nathoki Havali villages.
The Sutlej had already brought havoc at 72 villages at Talwar post of Ganda Singh headworks, Kothi Fateh Muhammad of Kanganpur and Chunian. The overflowing river submerged standing crops at thousands of acrs of farmlands, damaged scores of houses and destroyed infrastructure.
Meanwhile, 18 villages out of the 32 in Chunian tehsil had been flooded by the Sutlej. According to rescue officials, 239 people had been evacuated so far from the area. Vulnerable villages include Rukanpura, Fateh Muhammad Kalan, Shahbazkay, Kothi Fateh Muhammad, Muradkay, Khanay Peeray Kay, Mull Singh, Heemat Singh, Ajab Singh, Quli Aiman, Quli Shahoo, Nathaalkay, Dia Singh, Mehar Singh and Dharma. Several houses had reportedly collapsed in the flooded villages and the administration had established relief camps in the area.
Water level in the Sutlej near Mandi Usmanwala was also reportedly increasing steadily, posing a danger for Rangaywala, Tatara Kamal, and Athar Singh villages.
Pattoki tehsil administration also started evacuations at about one dozen villages along the Ravi.
Relief camps at Head Baloki and Nathay Jagir in Phoolnagar and Dulu Multani in Pattoki had been established for the affected villagers and their livestock.
