Rail track uprooted to save Chenab bridge

TOBA TEK SINGH: The only train which uses the Jhang-Karachi-Havelian (11 Up and 12 Dn) has been suspended in Jhang district and track uprooted to save Chenab bridge located at Chund Bharwana on Thursday evening.

The railway line near Wahga Kalela and Yakkay Wala villages was being removed under the supervision of army personnel to create a breach to ease river Chenab flood.

Officials said as a result, harm to Chund Bharwana bridge will be avoided.

Meanwhile, Jhang Deputy Commissioner Ali Akbar says 72,000 people and their 48,000 animals have been evacuated from low-lying areas of Chenab by administration, rescuers and army soldiers to safer places.

In Nankana Sahib, DC Tasleem Akhtar Rao said 1,800 families had been evacuated from banks of river Ravi to safer places along with their 3,000 cattle.

A farmer in Kamalia tehsil’s Chak 742-GB Syed Muhammad Imran said crops on dozens of acres of his village near Ravi had been inundated.

Faisalabad district administration says no village in Tandlianwala tehsil has been affected so far, while only 13 people trapped in water were rescued.

A press release said six flood relief camps have been established in localities of Malang, Kar , Mari Patan, Sheraza Patan, Alam Shah and Pir Salahuddin village. It says 36 people have been staying in these camps for the last 24 hours. Three medical camps have also been set up but no patient has been registered there so far.

In Toba district’s Kamalia and Pirmahal tehsels, 4,449 villagers have been shifted to safe areas along with their 1,993 animals.

The district administration spokesperson claimed that in 20 relief camps, food and all required facilities have been provided. On the demand of area farmers, machinery had been transported to river Ravi near Kamalia to open five gates of Kamalia -Chichawatni Road bridge.

The gates had been closed due to silt, wild bushes for the last two years. They had informed the DC two days ago that these choked gates could cause flood in the area.
