Five IJT men held

LAHORE, May 23: The police arrested on Tuesday five activists of the Islami Jamiat Tulaba from the Lahore Press Club where they had gone to hold a news conference against the expulsion of students from the Punjab University. Other teams, meanwhile, arrested 14 other students and their relatives from outside the camp jail where they had gathered to welcome the release of Government Islamia College, Civil Lines, IJT nazim Athar Noor.

In the first incident, the police held Punjab University IJT information secretary Imran Shahid and assistant information secretary Jawad Ahmad who had come to hold a news conference at the press club.

While IJT Punjab nazim Allah Bakhsh Leghari, city nazim Hafiz Hassaan and PU acting nazim Rana Muhammad Khalil were arrested when they came out of the press club after holding the conference.

Realising that the police were ready to arrest them, all three leaders called Jamaat-i-Islami Lahore amir Hafiz Salman Butt for their safe escape. However, the police intercepted Mr Butt’s car and despite his resistance, arrested the three leaders. —Staff Reporter
