Suspect dies in police custody

BAHAWALPUR, May 18: A suspected murderer was allegedly tortured to death by the officials at the Musafirkhana police station on Wednesday night.

Muhammad Sharif’s uncle said he, along with two other nephews namely Ghulam Hassan and Ghulam Mustafa, was taken into custody by the Musafirkhana plice on the complaint of Muhammad Aslam.

Sharif’s cousins Ghulam Husain and Allah Rakha alleged that the three suspects were tortured by the investigation police officials as a result of which Sharif expired. The body was brought to the Bahawal Victoria Hospital mortuary for post mortem.

When contacted, the police officials denied the charge and alleged that Sharif had committed suicide by slitting open his throat with a razor. His relatives, however, demanded that a murder case should be registered against the officials responsible for the death in custody.

In another case, a preliminary post mortem report confirmed murder of Rizwan, an engineering student.

Rizwan went missing when his other nine relatives were in the custody of four armed men, who had ealier kidnapped them along with the family chief Yahyah Khan, a lawyer, on Monday last. The student reportedly managed to flee from the kidnappers.

The police have yet to arrest any of the kidnappers of 10 members of Advocate Yahyah Khan’s family.
