Rs1.7m fine imposed on 87 sugar wholesalers

KARACHI: As many as 87 wholesalers of sugar were fined over Rs1.7 million for selling the commodity on higher prices across the city.

Official sources said that Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi ordered strict action against the violations of official sugar prices in the city and initiated a crackdown against sugar wholesalers.

They said that seven stores were sealed, including six in Aram Bagh and one in Saddar, while two wholesalers were arrested.

The commissioner has directed all deputy commissioners to form special teams, comprising assistant commissioners and mukhiarkars, to check prices of sugar and take action against violators in their respective districts.

As many as 32 wholesalers were fined Rs371,000 district South, 25 shopkeepers were fined Rs525,000 in district East, two shopkeepers were fined Rs6,000 in West, 13 shopkeepers Rs45,000 in Keamari, five wholesalers were fined Rs25,000 in Central, three wholesalers Rs75,000 in Malir and seven wholesalers were fined Rs30,000 in district Korangi.
