Man along with second wife kills first wife

SAHIWAL: A man, along with his second wife and two sisters-in-law, allegedly tortured and killed his first wife at Ward No. 4, Qaboola, Arifwala tehsil, on Thursday.

Qaboola police have registered a murder case under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code against main suspect Shaukat Islam alias Hyder Shah, his second wife Shagufta, and two other women Mah Noor and Sobia. The case was lodged by Muhammad Nadeem, elder brother of the deceased, Samina.

According to police, Shaukat had married Samina in 2005 and later took Shagufta as his second wife. Both women were living under the same roof in a two-storey house. Nadeem told police that Samina had sour relations with Shaukat and Shagufta and was frequently subjected to domestic abuse.

Qaboola Station House Officer Abid Ashiq said Shaukat and his second wife, Shagufta, were arrested. Police also recovered the pestle allegedly used in the torture and murder. The violence was the result of an argument over the television as Shagufta wanted to watch a programme, which led to a confrontation when Samina turned it off.

SUICIDE: A middle-aged woman died by suicide by hanging herself from a tree after allegedly facing domestic violence at village 108/7-R, Harappa.

According to police, 35-year-old Sana had married Faisal three years back. The couple used to quarrel. On Wednesday, Sana was reportedly beaten by her husband over a minor disagreement. Later, she took her own life by hanging herself.

Harappa police registered a murder case and handed over the body to the family after a postmortem examination. Faisal fled the scene and has not yet been held.

ABANDONED TWINS DIE: Two newborn twin babies, abandoned near Maiwali Mosque on Muhammadpur Road in Sahiwal, died on Thursday morning in the ICU of the Sahiwal Teaching Hospital.

According to eyewitnesses, unknown men left the premature infants wrapped in cotton cloth by the roadside early on Wednesday morning before fleeing the scene. Villagers alerted Rescue 1122, which shifted the twins to the hospital.

Doctors said both infants had been born prematurely and sustained head injuries. Medical assessments indicated they were only about one-hour old at the time they were found and were critical.

The Bahadur Shah police and the district office of the Child Welfare and Protection Bureau (CWPB) launched an investigation to trace the parents but have so far been unsuccessful.

CWPB District Officer Mr Adnan told Dawn that the twins were admitted to the ICU. Both babies passed away and their burial was arranged by Edhi Foundation.
