GUJRAT: The Gujranwala district has topped other districts in the Punjab government’s Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) during the second quarter between April and June 2025.

The Services and General Administration Department (S&GAD) generates the ranking based on points given on 32 KPIs after a systematic evaluation on a quarterly basis.

Official sources said that the Gujranwala district topped the ranking by securing 96.06 points followed by Multan 95.87 and Rawalpindi at 95.22 points. Whereas, Sialkot and Faisalabad secured 91.61 and 84.46 points for the fourth and fifth positions respectively.

Sources said that Gujranwala district had secured the first position for the second consecutive time in the current year as it topped the ranking for the first quarter during January and March.

The KPIs include price control of essential food items, bakery items, roti, Shuthra Punjab, repair of small roads and patch works, anti-encroachment drive, inspection of uplift projects, health facilities and schools, repair of dilapidated bridges, manhole covers, dog culling, inspection of bus terminals, clinic on wheels and other such initiatives of the provincial government.

Gujranwala Deputy Commissioner Naveed Ahmed told Dawn that the KPI ranking system was auto-generated from the online system in which every district uploaded its performance on a daily basis.

He said the special branch and the special monitoring unit conducted on-ground inspections to check the KPIs uploaded by the districts. He said that if the self-evaluation and the inspection teams’ report corroborated, then the concerned district was awarded an additional 10 points.

Mr Ahmed said that the system had helped improve governance in Punjab and other provinices should also follow this initiative.

FIA: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) claimed to have arrested six alleged human traffickers, including a most-wanted suspect, during a crackdown in Gujranwala region on Wednesday.

The arrests have been made by the FIA’s Gujrat Circle in Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad and Wazirabad districts.

An FIA official told Dawn that a most-wanted suspect, Muhammad Ali, son of Muhammad Zar, a resident of Bhekhi Shareef, Mandi Bahauddin tehsil, was apprehended in connection with the four cases lodged against him under sections 17/22 EO 1979 and 3/6 PSMA 2018, with FIA Gujrat police station.

He said the suspect’s name was included in the FIA’s Red Book 2023 as he was linked to the March 2021 Libya/Greece boat tragedy. He said Ali allegedly extorted Rs2.5m from each of the four persons who later died in the boat capsize tragedy on their way to Italy.

Meanwhile, FIA Gujrat Circle also claimed to have arrested two brothers Mubashir Ali and Shafaqat Ali of Kot Bela Gujrat for their involvement in a number of human trafficking cases.

The official says another suspect, Shahzad Tahseen of Gujrat, has been arrested for allegedly extorting Rs3.7m from the complainant on the pretext of sending him to Greece. However, the suspect didn’t fulfill his commitment, nor returned the amount to the complainant.

Two other suspects are Sajjad Hussain of Kot Khizri, Wazirabad, and Muhammad Shabbir of Kassoki in Pindi Bhattian tehsil of Hafizabad district.
