‘The Security Council must act urgently and decisively’: Asim Iftikhar Ahmad
Speaking about the US strikes on nuclear sites in Iran, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad warned that the attacks set a “dangerous precedent and pose a grave threat to the safety and security of populations across the region and, indeed, the world”.
“As the body entrusted with the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security, the Security Council must act urgently and decisively.”
Ahmad said that the UNSC members share a collective responsibility to:
- Unequivocally condemn and reject the attacks on Iran since June 13,which are in clear contravention of international law and the UNCharter.
- Denounce the attack on IAEA safeguarded nuclear facilities
- All parties must adhere fully to international law, particularlyinternational humanitarian law
- Call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a completeceasefire
- Promote urgent recourse to dialogue and diplomacy consistent with thepurposes and principles of the UN Charter, to find a peacefulresolution to the Iranian nuclear issue
To pursue these objectives, Pakistan joined Russia and China in circulating a draft UN Security Council resolution.
