HYDERABAD, May 3: The Sindh Qaumi Ittehad has reiterated its rejection of dams on the river Indus and announced that a shutter-down strike would be observed throughout Sindh on May 9, to protest against dam building in the province.

The administrative committee of the Ittehad, which met here on Tuesday, announced that a rally would be held in Thalla town on May 18, against the proposed water projects.

It said the rulers had hatched conspiracies against Sindh to destroy its agrarian economy.

The meeting pointed out that survival of the people of Sindh depended on Indus water and if the supply of water was stopped, the province would be destroyed.

It alleged that by inaugurating the Basha Dam, General Pervez Musharraf had taken a step to convert Sindh into a desert.

The meeting appointed various committees to ensure success of the general strike on May 9, and protest rally on May 18.

It severely criticised increases in the prices of oil.

Leaders attending the meeting included Ayoub Shar of the Sindh National Front, Hote Khan Gadhi of the Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party, Hashim Khoso of the Jeay Sindh Mahaz-J, Punhal Sario of the Sindh National Council and others.
