KARACHI, May 2: Water supply will remain suspended in several parts of the city for 36 hours from Thursday in the wake of a closure being applied by the KWSB for installing a valve in the 84-inch pipeline of K-III project at North-East Karchi pumping station.

The localities to be affected by water closure include all the sectors of North Karachi, Surjani Town, Gulshan-i-Maymar, Ahsonabad, Sohrab Goth, Al-Asif Square and its adjacent areas.

According to KWSB, the closure would be applied between 6am on Thursday and 6pm on Friday.

A KWSB spokesman said the supply was being closed to facilitate work for installing an 84-inch valve in the 84-inch pipeline of the K-III project at the NEK pumping station to boost supply to the localities hooked to the Hub dam.

He said the residents of Orangi Town, Baldia, SITE, Shershah, Surjani Town have already started getting water from K-III and after the installation of the valve in the 84-inch pipeline, they will get supply with much better pressure.

He said the work would be completed by Friday at 6pm and all the affected localities would start getting normal supply shortly afterwards.

He appealed to the residents of the affected localities to conserve water during the closure period.

Meanwhile, complaints of water shortage have been received from a number of city areas, , including Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Gulistan-i-Jauhar and Federal B Area where people are forced to purchase tankers at exorbitant rates.

Water is not being released in F B Area’s BL-20 for last three days, a resident said.

He said frequent power failures were aggravating the situation.

Another resident of the area said that the valvesmen were creating artificial water shortage.

“The valvesmen are demanding money for supply of water even on alternative days and on our refusal, we face water shortage” he added.

People have urged the KWSB and City District Government Karachi (CDGK) authorities to take stock of the situation and adopt measures for uninterrupted supply of water in residential areas.
