HYDERABAD, April 12: City District Nazim Kanwar Naveed Jamil has said that the development and promotion of education is the priority of the city government.

The nazim said he was not only concentrating on the construction of school buildings, but also striving to improve the standard of education.

Speaking at the foundation-stone laying ceremony of Jinnah Law College within the premises of city college here on Wednesday, he said work on 40 educational schemes was in progress while 156 new projects would be launched next year.

The district nazim said the city government had planned to convert 110 schools into English medium schools.

He said repair and renovation of school and college buildings was the responsibility of the district government, but it was also striving to improve the standard of education.

The zila nazim said that in the law college, located in the city college complex, eight classrooms and an auditorium were being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs5.2 million.

He said Rs3.5 million would be spent on the repairs and renovation of city college, adding that this work would be completed in a year.

Government school teachers, he said, would be imparted training in private educational centres and added that the district government would shoulder the expenses. He announced that work on the BSc classrooms and laboratory in the city college would be started with the construction of LLB classrooms.

Nazim city taluka Hyderabad Javed Jabbar, Jinnah Law College principal and former Hyderabad mayor Prof Aftab Ahmed Shaikh, EDO Works and Services Abdul Haleem Ghouri, UC nazims, naib nazims and councillors were also present on the occasion.

APPEAL: Expressing sorrow and grief over the loss of human lives in Nashtar Park Karachi, Kanwar Naveed Jamil has appealed to the people of Hyderabad to foil evil designs of saboteurs and anti-state elements through their unity.

In a statement, he urged the people not only to remain peaceful, but also to keep a vigilant eye on the enemies of peace and the country.

DIOCESE: The Diocese of Hyderabad, Church of Pakistan, has expressed grief over the Nishtar Park tragedy and demanded that the government should take effective measures to eliminate terrorism from the country.

In a statement issued here on Wednesday, Bishop Rafique Masih said over 60 precious lives, the Islamic religious leaders, had been lost in the tragedy.

These incidents could not be checked without eliminating terrorists, he said.
