NEW DELHI, April 3: A by-election which India’s ruling Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi is to contest will take place on May 8, the election commission announced on Monday.

Gandhi quit as a member of parliament on March 23 amid right-wing opposition charges that she wrongfully held a second salaried government post.
