UC nazim shot dead

GUJRANWALA, March 31: A union council nazim was shot dead and his uncle and a gunman injured in Nah Kallan near Ghakkar Town here on Friday night. Natt Kallan UC nazim Atta Khaliq Mehr was sitting near the main gate of his house when four armed men came there and opened fire. The nazim died on the spot while his uncle, Mian Mushtaq, and gunman Taza Khan sustained injuries. The injured were taken to hospital.

CPWB: A centre of the Child Protection and Welfare Bureau was inaugurated here on Friday.

At the inaugural ceremony, speakers said the first centre was established in Lahore in February last.

They said more centres would be set up in Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan and Rahim Yar Khan during the next phase, and a hostel for some 100 children would be constructed in Gujranwala. These children would be provided education and health facilities besides meal and uniform at the centre.

Meanwhile, the centre staff caught 13 children, including a girl, from various parts of the city while begging and brought them to the centre.

NOMINATED: Wapda has named local chamber of commerce and industry president Akhlaq Ahmad Butt on the board of directors of the Gujranwala Electric Power Company and issued a notification on Friday.

The local business community which hailed the decision hoped that Mr Butt would act as a bridge between the Gepco and industrialists.
