ISLAMABAD, Feb 4: An official spokesman said on Monday the government needed no foreign or domestic prompting, as its commitment to hold free, fair and impartial elections by October this year has sprung from its firm belief in democracy and is not a result of any pressure.
Responding to PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto‘s statement that compromise with the government is possible only if it holds free and fair elections and transfers power to civilian authorities, the spokesman said the government did not believe in deals and compromises with anyone least of all with those who are fugitive of law.
Reiterating the government‘s commitment to hold free, fair and impartial elections, the spokesman said the government had a well-earned reputation of upholding its commitment on vital national issues.
“There is absolutely no doubt in the minds of the people that the forthcoming elections will be held in a free, fair and impartial manner,” the spokesman said.
