AUCKLAND (New Zealand), March 30: He’s keen to play in first World Cup to be staged in the Caribbean next year but Brian Lara accepts it is up to selectors to accommodate his stated intention of reducing his number of One-day Internationals leading to the tournament.

“It’s a situation where we still have to sit and talk,” Lara said. “It’s not just my decision...but I am very much interested in playing in World Cup.”

“It’s West Indies’ cricket you’re talking about. We’ve got selectors, we’ve got a coach, we’ve got a captain and everybody is trying to get everybody in the right groove and get the team gelling.”

“I can’t be a hindrance to that and I’ve told them I want to be a part of that. We’ll wait and see.”

Although he sought exemption from physically taxing ODIs last year, in an effort to extend his Test career, Lara stressed his intention was still to be in World Cup team. He hasn’t played an ODI since home series against South Africa last May.

Lara is now 33 days away from his 37th birthday and pleaded he would find it “very difficult” to play in all those matches as well as four Tests against India and three against Pakistan in same period.—Agencies
