KARACHI: Illegal bus terminal in Saddar removed

KARACHI, March 23: The anti-encroachment department of Jamshed Town has dismantled the decades-old inter-city bus terminal at Taj Medical Complex and Depot Lines in a week-long operation.   The inter-city bus operators had been occupying the footpaths and major portion of the Saqib Shaheed Road for years creating serious problems for the local residents and the patients visiting various hospitals in the area.

The movement of their vehicles was also creating hazards for other traffic on M.A. Jinnah Road and other arteries in Saddar area.

At present, more than 900 inter-city buses are being operated from the terminals at Lea Market, Liaquatabad, Shershah, Saddar, Lyari, Old Subzimandi etc.

An official of the Jamshed Town administration said that the anti-encroachment cell carried out an operation during which workshops, hotels and all other encroachments were removed from Depot Lines and Taj Medical Complex areas.

The buses removed from the areas have been moved to vacant plots in the Lines area for the time being and would finally be shifted, in collaboration with the city government, to Super Highway, RCD Highway and National Highway soon, he said.

However, many buses are still parked at the Mansfield Street, Dawoodpota Road and Service Road off M. A. Jinnah Road. These areas fall in the jurisdiction of the Karachi Cantonment Board, Saddar Town and city government.—Online
