WHILE there have always been voices against what is perceived as a sheer discrimination against minorities in Pakistan, the fact is that some isolated incidents have, indeed, taken place, but there is no discrimination against minority communities at the state level. The recent promotion of Dr Helen Mary Roberts to the rank of brigadier is a case in point. She is the first Christian woman to be promoted to such a high rank in Pakistan Army.

This landmark achievement is a rather powerful evidence of her commitment to the profession, and a shining example for members of the minority communities in Pakistan as well as for all the women in the country. This is the real face of Pakistan that media houses, especially international outlets, do not focus upon. For some strange reasons, they prefer to strengthen the stereotypes.

The promotion of Brig Dr Helen, who belongs to Army Medical Corps, also shatters the deep-rooted stereotypes and displays the potential for women and minorities to reach high-ranking positions. Undoubtedly, her success is a source of inspiration for young girls and minority communities. Before her, Dr Kailash Kumar, a Hindu officer, was promoted in 2022 to the rank of lieutenant-colonel, while Harcharan Singh, a Sikh officer, is also serving in Pakistan Army as a major.

All these reali-life examples only prove that merit prevails, and that determination can break even the toughest of barriers.

As such, there is a need now to build on such stories through systemic changes to ensure more such success stories. The achievement of Brig Dr Helen should spark further reforms to promote diversity and equality in society. Talent and dedication know no boundaries of gender or ethnicity.
