Misery on display

THE Wassayo Jamali village near the city of Nawabshah has remained flooded with stagnant water for long. With the monsoon season due soon, things will only go worse as no proper water drainage arrangements have been made.

In fact, the standing water has already done great harm to the village’s rather dilapidated infrastructure. Cases of houses collapsing are often reported during the rainy season. Children playing in the village streets expose themselves to various diseases as various viruses and bacteria remain active in the environment. The irony of the whole situation is that while dirty water is seen everywhere, clean drinking water is a scarcity that make life difficult for the locals.

Politicians visit the village only during the election season, and apparently have nothing to do with the monsoon season. They make a long list of promises during such visits. In fact, they make all sorts of promises without having any intention to honour their words once they get elected. People are continuously told that they would get uninterrupted water and electricity supply, construction of schools, proper roads and sewerage system, and a healthy and safe environment. The bigger problem is that the people somehow continue to fall for such promises.

The relevant authorities should pay due attention to the unlivable conditions prevailing in the village, and provide some relief to the local people from their long-standing problems that continue to affect their lives rather negatively.
