MARDAN: Federal Minister for Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan Affairs Engineer Amir Muqam has asked lawyers to work for strengthening of democracy in the country.

Addressing the oath-taking ceremony of district bar association here on Saturday as a chief guest, he lauded the role of lawyers in Pakistan movement. He said that the founder of nation Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah was also a lawyer.

“The role of lawyers is of great importance in the development and prosperity of the country,” said the minister and urged them play their role for supremacy of Constitution and strengthening democracy.

However, he said some members of legal fraternity were working for their vested interests. He said that lawyers should prefer national interests.

Mr Muqam also urged judges to avoid announcing verdicts on the basis of their personal likes and dislikes. He said that the entire nation was expecting justice from judges. He said that the countrymen were looking towards judiciary for speedy justice.

He blamed Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf for vandalism on May 9 last year. He said that PTI leaders and workers destroyed national assets including historical buildings, monuments and property of army when their leader Imran Khan was arrested on May 9 last year.

The minister said that the institution of army should not be criticised as it had been performing great role in the defence of country. He added that weakening of army was tantamount to weak the foundation of Pakistan.

He asked provincial government of PTI in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to work for the prosperity and development of the province as people mandated it for the purpose. He said that provincial government was free to deliver if it wanted to work for the betterment of the province.

Earlier, the federal minister administered oath to the newly-elected cabinet of district bar association including president Noor Badshah Toru, vice-president Sajad Ahmad, general secretary Zahir Mohammad, joint secretary Hazrat Ibrahim Toru and finance secretary Javed Iqbal.
