KHAIRPUR, March 16: More than 100 lawyers including office-bearers of Khairpur District Bar Association (DBA) took out a procession from DBA office to press club here on Thursday. They were protesting against shortage of water in 12 minors of tail-end of Faiz Nahar canal and functioning of direct outlets.

The workers of Abadgars Action Committee and Sindh Hari Committee led by Dr Fatah Memon also joined them. The lawyers raised slogans against irrigation officials.

Speaking on the occasion, they criticized the irrigation minister and said he was not ready to solve problems of the growers. They said that following shortage of water in 12 minors a vast area has been rendered barren and growers were facing economic crisis.

They added that if the chief engineer of the Sukkur Barrage had admitted the fact that there was no water in 12 minors namely Machhar Canal, Mehrab Minor, Girkhino, Teekno, Kharal Minor and others but teams were formed to dramatize it so that issue could be further delayed.

They said that the irrigation minister himself should have visited the area. They regretted that the minister was no ready to meet growers.

Lawyers Ghulam Mustafa Sehto, Allah Warayo Soomro, Shafqat Hussain Mahessar, Shafi Mohammad Chandio, Ghulam Mustafa, Ahmed Ali Shahani, leaders of Jeay Sindh Mahaz, comrade Kamran Durrani and Manzoor Jehangir spoke on the occasion.

On the other hand, a large number of growers led by nazim of UC Agra, Fida Hussain Abbasi and Muzaffar Hussain Tunio, took out a procession on the National Highway and staged a demonstration between Khuhra-Gambat area in favour of direct outlets here on Thursday.Later, they reached Khairpur. The procession ended at the office of the district nazim where a delegation of growers met district nazim Syed Niaz Hussain Shah Jilani. He assured them that the legally sanctioned direct outlets will not be closed.

BODY EXHUMED: On the complaint of Ms Sakina, body of her daughter Ms Tajul alias Taj Bibi was exhumed in presence of the civil judge Thari Mirwah, Mr Inam Ali Kalhoro, a team of doctors from Nawabshah and the police in the Brohi Village near Chowdagi on Thursday.

The doctors’ team consisted of Dr Mohammad Ismail Arain, lady Dr Waheeda Noorani and five other doctors.

The body buried near residential area in village Brohi, was exhumed and after post-mortem, it was handed over to the relatives, who took it to Daur, Nawabshah district. Ms Sakina had lodged an FIR.
