QUETTA, March 13: Balochistan Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani said on Monday that the prime minister would announce a special development package for Balochistan during a visit to the province.
Speaking at the inauguration of a training workshop for district and tehsil nazims, organized by the Decentralization Support Programme of the Provincial Finance Department here on Monday, he said half of the package would directly go to district governments.
“The political process which the present government has launched in the country will go ahead successfully and the local government system will play a pivotal role in this regard,” he observed.
The governor, however, stressed the need for improving financial discipline in district governments and ensuring proper utilization of development funds. He said the government would continue to provide necessary funds to district governments.
He said the local government system was introduced because the old local bodies system was not meeting the expectations of the people.
“The system was introduced to devolve power to lower levels so that people’s problems could be resolved at their doorsteps”, he added.
There were still some shortcomings in the system which were being removed, he said. —APP
