VEHARI, March 10: More than 200 electricity meters were burnt in Thursday night’s rain in various locality of the city and its adjoining area, specially in union council No 1, 9-1/WB Danyal, Liaquatpura, Pir Murad and People’s Colony.
A group of residents of union council 1 told this correspondent on Friday that old meters (black body) installed about eight to 10 years ago were being installed on electricity poles. The metres were not waterproof and burnt in heavy rain, they added.
They demanded replacement of meters free of cost.
When contacted, Vehari Mepco Xen was not available for comments. However, another Wapda official said the department was responsible to replace the meters free of cost. However, some affected consumers said that linemen and other official were demanding Rs1,200 to Rs1,500 for installing new meter outside their houses.
Another official said meter were in short supply these days and it could take 15 days to replace them.
