GUJRANWALA, Oct 5: Four people, including two brothers, were killed while five others sustained burn injuries on Friday when fireworks blew up in neighbouring Eminabad village.
Landlord Riasat Ali of Aunchey Kholey village had established a fireworks manufacturing unit on his land. At the time of incident, Riasat, his brothers and employees were in the process of making fireworks when they exploded after someone threw a lit cigarette. Riasat, his brother Azmat, employees Fiaz and Riaz died instantly while Ashraf, brother of deceased Riasat, and four employees Ijaz, Shafqat, Imran and Iqbal sustained burn injuries. They were rushed to the local civil hospital where the condition of two injured was stated to be serious.
SCHEMES: The Water and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) has allocated Rs465 million for its master plan to construct the sewerage and water supply schemes in the city.
This was stated by Wasa managing director Muhammad Aslam and director Mujahid Pervez in a briefing to Nazims and Naib Nazims of various union councils here on Friday.
They said the master plan of sewerage and water supply schemes would be completed in three phases during the next three years. They claimed that citizens facing problems relating to sewerage and drinking water would be resolved after the completion of the master plan.
SCHOOLS CLOSED: At least 20 boys and girls elementary schools in Naushera Virkan tehsil have been closed for want of teaching staff.
Expressing their resentment against the Education department, the parents demanded that the teaching staff should be inducted in these schools without any delay.
Some residents told this correspondent here on Friday that no district or deputy education officers (male, female) had bothered to visit these schools.
Notices: The tehsil city council on Friday issued show-cause notices to contractors working on various development schemes for using substandard material.
Tehsil city council Nazim Babu Javed Ahmad received complains that substandard material was being used in the construction of roads in city by contractors. Many roads have been destroyed just after the completion of construction work.
The Nazim sent chief engineer to visit the site and review the under construction projects. He found that substandard material were being used by the contractors. He stopped the construction work on various projects and apprised the Nazim of the situation.
Meanwhile, tehsil city council gave executive powers to Naib Nazim Chaudhry Ehsanullah to deal with sanitation matters.
DEMOLISHED: The tehsil city council demolished a hotel and got vacated the state land from land grabbers here on Friday.
Land grabbers had occupied the state land on the GT Road some 30 years ago and constructed a hotel and shops on it. When tehsil city council Nazim Babu Javed Ahmad came to known about the matter, he ordered its demolition.
