63 PTI activists in Peshawar arrested for rioting released

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar police said the the 63 Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf workers, who were arrested for rioting and blocking roads on Sunday, had been released on submitting personal bonds.

The officials said five PTI activists were arrested by Gulbarg police, nine by East Cantonment, 12 by Sarband, four by Chamkani, seven by Khazana, three by Paharhi Pura and 16 activists were arrested by Gulbahar police.

They said the PTI activists were arrested under different sections of the law for riots and blocking roads. However, majority of the activists were later released on personal bonds.

Meanwhile, the police briefly detained PTI candidates in the provincial capital on Monday for carrying weapons.

“PTI candidates for NA-32 Asif Khan and PK-83 Mena Khan Afridi were detained by Khan Raziq police for carrying AK-47 [Kalashnikov], but since the weapon was licenced, both of them were released. They were, however, told that Section 144 was in place and there was a ban on carrying of weapons,” an official of Khan Raziq police station told Dawn. He said they were advised not to carry the weapons.

When contacted, Mena Khan said they were carrying licensed weapon due to the prevailing law and order situation.
