KARACHI: Seasoned politician, lawyer and columnist Nafees Siddiqi passed away after protracted illness here on Saturday. He was in his 80s.

His family said the funeral prayers would be held on Sunday (today) after Zuhr prayers at Masjid-i-Noorul Islam, DHA, Phase-V.

Mr Siddiqi was associated with the National Students Federation (NSF) during his student life in the 1960s. He was part of democratic struggle against the military regimes of Ayub Khan and Gen Ziaul Haq.

He also joined many parties, including Asghar Khan-led Tehreek-i-Istaqlal, Pakistan Peoples Party, Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi-led National Peoples Party as well as the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf during his decades-long political career.

The PPP had made him an adviser to the Sindh chief minister between 1993 and 1996. He also served as the general secretary of PPP’s Sindh chapter.

He was politically inactive during the past many years. However, his fortnightly columns appeared in Daily Jang on a regular basis.
