German envoy visits industrial show

GUJRANWALA, Feb 27: Pakistani products have the potential to become symbol of quality, said Germany’s commercial counsellor Jhon Colmnis. He was talking to local manufacturers during his visit to ‘Made-in-Gujranwala Exhibition’ organised by the local chamber of commerce and industry at the Ghulshan Iqbal park on GT road on Monday.

He appreciated the quality of local products and said engineering and light items, besides kitchen ware, textile, marble and plastic goods could make their place in the international market.

He suggested that an exhibition of local products should be held every year regularly.

Earlier, chamber president Akhlaq Ahmad Butt and other office-bearers welcomed the German envoy and briefed him about the products.

Meanwhile, the chamber organised a Qirat competition on Monday where MNA Maulana Qazi Hamid Ullah was the chief guest.

The chamber gave Rs10,000 prize to Qari Nasimul Hassan, Rs7,500 to Qari Bilal and Rs5,000 to Qari Tanvir, besides Rs1,000 each to other participants of the contest.

RE-ARRESTED: A human smuggler, who had escaped from the lock-up some one-and-a-half-month back, was re-arrested by an FIA passport cell raiding party from Defence in Lahore on Monday.

Reports said the FIA had arrested accused Altaf Butt for his involvement in sending about 500 youths to Greece. He was detained at the agency lock-up from where he had escaped.

On a tip-off that the accused was present in Lahore, the FIA team conducted a raid there and re-arrested the accused.

A case has been registered against the accused.

It may be mentioned that two police guards Nazir and Rafiq of Sadar police had already been arrested on the charge of helping the accused in his escape.

HELD: Seven robbers were caught red-handed by villagers and police when they were looting passers-by in Naushera Virkan and Ghakkhar Town on Monday.

Three armed men were looting people by setting up a picket on the road near Jagowal village when they were caught by villagers and police.

They were identified as Asim, Sohail and Zakaullah of the same area.

Four dacoits were arrested by the police after an exchange of fire when they were looting passers-by near Ghakkhar Town.

Those arrested are Younas, Shahbaz, Idrees and Imran.

Further investigation is under way.

REMOVED: A squad of the Qila Dedar Singh Town removed all encroachments on Hafizabad Road and Sheranwala Bagh here on Monday.

Town nazim Tariq Mahmood and other senior officers were accompanying the squad.

BAIL ACCEPTED: The Anti-Terrorism Court No 1 accepted bail applications of 12 activists of religious parties here on Monday.

They were arrested for blocking a road and burning effigies and used tyres during a procession taken out in protest against publication of blasphemous cartoons some two weeks ago in Narowal. Judge Mujahid Mustaqim ordered their release.
