Netanyahu ‘balancing two pressures’ in Israel: analyst

Regarding Egypt’s latest proposal for a truce, there are disagreements in Israel over the captives and whether to engage with the Egyptian proposal or not, says analyst Tamer Qarmout, assistant professor at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies.

“We’re seeing increasing internal pressure on Netanyahu from the opposition parties, from families of captives to engage in this proposal. But Netanyahu is still holding onto his own grounds,” Qarmout told Al Jazeera.

“Tactically, he’s using pressure from families who have lost soldiers in Gaza on a daily basis who want revenge, who want to see an end to Hamas; he’s balancing the two pressures. It’s an ongoing game in Israel, but so far I see Netanyahu still has a chance to stick to his position.”

Qarmout added that the majority of the Zionist population continues to support Israel’s military operation in Gaza, “and that’s the problem”.
