UK’s David Cameron, Germany’s Annalena Baerbock back ‘sustainable ceasefire’ in Gaza

UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock have issued a joint call for a “sustainable ceasefire” in Gaza.

In an op-ed published in the Sunday Times, Cameron and Baerbock said that “too many civilians have been killed” in Gaza and the war “cannot drag on and on”.

“Israel has the right to defend itself but, in doing so, it must abide by international humanitarian law,” Cameron and Baerbock said.

“Israel will not win this war if its operations destroy the prospect of peaceful co-existence with Palestinians. They have a right to eliminate the threat posed by Hamas. But too many civilians have been killed.”

However, the top diplomats stopped short of calling for an immediate ceasefire.
