PML’s Gujranwala city body dissolved

GUJRANWALA, Feb 21: The ruling PML city organisation has been dissolved by Punjab chief minister, who is also provincial party head, owing to creation of four new towns under the city district government, issuing the notification on Tuesday.

The chief minister took the decision after reviewing party matters at a meeting held in Lahore the other day.

According to PML district senior vice-president Amir Yaqoob Warriach and secretary-general Umer Bashir, the party would be reorganised at provincial assembly constituency level, where an MPA or party ticket-holder would be appointed president.

They said planning was under way to launch a drive for increasing party membership.

Source said former city nazim Babu Javed Ahmad was appointed the party’s new city president.

BOOKED: A clerk of Nandipur Town copy branch and a former vaccinator were booked by Sabzi Mandi police on charge of forgery here on Tuesday.

Reports said the accused clerk, Muhammad Anwer Mehr and Muhammad Bashir allegedly broke into the town office and were busy tempering the official record when some administrative officials reached there. The both accused escaped from the office along with some record.

The police have registered the case against the accused.

MEETING: The local chamber of commerce and industry along with leaders of various sects condemned the publication of blasphemous cartoons by European newspapers and urged a peaceful protest against those responsible for the sacrilege.

Speaking at a joint meeting held here on Tuesday, presided over by chamber president Akhlaq Ahmad Butt, the participants demanded punishment for the editor and the cartoonist.

Maulana Zahidul Rashedi, Maulana Abdul Aziz Chishti, MMA district president Bilal Qudrat and others also demanded legislation in this connection.

They assured the administration on behalf of business community that no violence would be allowed during any procession in future.

RALLY: The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Employees Welfare Association on Tuesday held a rally to protest against the publication of blasphemous cartoons.

The board employees led by union leaders staged a protest demo outside the board premises. Meanwhile, a meeting of board officers and employees presided over by chairman Col Masudul Haq (retired) held at the board complex here adopted a resolution to condemn the blasphemous sketches and demanded that trade and diplomatic relations with European countries be severed and their products boycotted.
