South Korean Wi claims Malaysian Open

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 19: South Korea’s Charlie Wi birdied his last hole for a closing nine-under-par 63 Sunday to win the Malaysian Open

Wi finished the shortened tournament with a total 19-under-par 197 at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club to edge two-time defending champion Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand by one stroke.

Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin carded the week’s best with a 62 for third place on 199, one shot ahead of English duo John Bickerton and Mark Foster.

Thongchai failed in his bid to win the same event three times in a row as he carded a 66 Sunday, missing a birdie chance from 18 feet on the last hole.

Thai teenager Chinarat Phadungsil, winner of the Double A International Open on home soil last season, did well with sixth position alongside Australia’s Gary Simpson.

Wi launched his title charge with a birdie on the fourth, followed by a 30-foot eagle at the next hole and turned in 31 with birdies on seventh and nine.

With the chasing pack hot on his heels, he grabbed the lead with birdies on the

10th, 13th and 16th holes and made a crucial par save on 17 before rolling in a five-foot putt at the last to clinch the win — his first on the European Tour.
