Rebate on ‘bogus’ invoices

GUJRANWALA, Feb 18: The sales tax department unearthed a scam of tax evasion and rebate of millions of rupees in fake export items and arrested on Saturday two executives of four companies and their adviser.

Reports said accused Shehzad Butt and Rashid Malik allegedly got prepared fake documents of their companies for export with the help of their adviser Shahid Kaleem and got rebate from the government through bogus invoices.

On receiving information about the scandal, the sales tax authorities got conducted an inquiry through investigation officer of the department, Malik Muhammad Afzal. After the probe, a raiding party, led by deputy collector Dr Adnan Akram, arrested them from their hideouts. The team recovered around 200 fake stamps and bogus record of various companies and registered a case against them.

Special judge (customs) Syed Nasir Ali Shah issued their seven-day physical remand for further interrogation.

Further raids were under way for the arrest of their accomplices.
