GDA official held for taking bribe

GUJRANWALA, Feb 17: The Anti-Corruption Establishment caught red-handed an assistant director of the Gujranwala Development Authority (GDA) while taking bribe here on Friday.

Reports said Arshad Warraich, who had demanded Rs100,000 for transferring a plot of complainant Rana Nadimul Hasan, allegedly took Rs70,000 as bribe in advance from him. On Friday, he was receiving the balance of Rs30,000 in a hotel when judicial magistrate Irfan Sundho raided there and arrested him.

HEARING: The Anti-Terrorism Court No 1 continued hearing of the Sialkot jail case here on Friday.

Recording his statement, eyewitness and additional sessions judge Chaudhry Nazir Ahmad Khan said former SHO Zulfikar Ali Virk had started abusing prisoners for making hostage of judges before an operation which fuelled the violence in jail.

He revealed that judges saved their lives by taking shelter in jail toilets and later they came out after breaking its walls. He claimed that the police had failed to record his statement despite directives from a Sialkot judge on five occasions. Later, he was quizzed by the accused counsel.

Judge Mujahid Mustaqim adjourned the case till Saturday (today). All the accused involved in the case were present in the court.

Meanwhile, the court sent 14 activists of religious parties to jail on judicial remand.
