Editor calls for decolonising journalism over stylebooks restricting usage of ‘Palestine’
The News editor Zebunnisa Burki has called for decolonising journalism, sharing a post that showed the Associated Press stylebook restricting the usage of the word Palestine.
The shared stylebook mentions that the areas of Gaza Strip, West Bank and east Jerusalem were “once part of the traditional Middle Eastern region of Palestine”.
However, it states to use “Palestine” only in the context of its activities in international bodies — such as the United Nations that recognises Palestine as a non-member observer state.
